01The idea

Como has been slowing people down for two thousand years. Let it.

Nobody has ever improved a Como morning by filling it. This sketch protects the lake’s real luxury — unscheduled hours in beautiful rooms — and hangs just enough around them: villa gardens after the gates close to the public, the far shore reached by private launch, a mountain lunch where the lake becomes a map below you.

Four nights, one villa-hotel on the water, and a boatman who waits so you never watch a clock. Pliny the Younger had two villas here for exactly this reason; we’ve simply updated the plumbing.

This is a sketch, not a package. Dates, pace, houses and tables all bend around who’s travelling — no two versions of this journey have ever left the studio the same.

02Day by day
Day 1 · Arrival

Milan behind, water ahead.

An hour’s drive from Milan and the temperature of everything drops. Check in to a villa-hotel with its own jetty, unpack once, and take the first riva cruise as the light goes long — a slow loop past facades that have been photographed for a century and still win.

  • Sunset riva cruise — cedar, brass, and a slow wake
  • First dinner on the terrace, boats knocking softly below
The bow of a wooden boat gliding toward the mountains
First evening on the water
Day 2 · The villas

Gardens, after the gates close.

The lake’s great gardens — Balbianello’s terraces, Carlotta’s azaleas — are glorious and, by mid-morning, busy. So you see them at the edges of the day, including an after-hours hour at a villa with nobody else on the loggia. In between, a long lunch in Tremezzina.

  • Villa del Balbianello — the loggia, out of hours
  • Gardener’s walk at Villa Carlotta, species by species
  • Lunch on the Greenway, lake on your left the whole time
A lakeside villa garden in bloom
After hours, on the loggia
Day 3 · The far shore

Bellagio & Varenna, by launch.

The centro lago by private boat: Bellagio before the ferries thicken, then across to Varenna — the quieter, better half of the postcard — for lunch by the water and a walk on the Lovers’ Path. On the way home, the boatman cuts the engine mid-lake. Nobody ever asks why.

  • Bellagio early — the silk shops and the point, pre-ferry
  • Varenna lunch at the waterline, risotto with perch
  • Engine-off moment, mid-lake, mountains all round
A wooden jetty reaching into still lake water
Varenna, from the jetty
Day 4 · Silk & altitude

Thread, then thin air.

Como wove silk for Europe’s couture houses long before the lake had influencers. A private visit to one of the last ateliers — looms, archives, a scarf with your name on the selvedge — then up the mountain for lunch at altitude, the whole lake unrolled below. Farewell dinner back at the villa.

  • Silk atelier — archive drawers from the 1920s
  • Mountain lunch, thousand-metre view, zero hurry
  • Farewell table at the water’s edge
Finely woven fabric in a pale natural weave

04Where you’ll sleep

A villa with its own jetty.

A frescoed grand-hotel salon
The classic · west shore

The grande dame

Frescoed ceilings, gardens to the waterline, and a jetty where your launch idles — the lake’s front row since the 1870s.

An intimate villa room with designer chairs
The alternative · quieter water

A villa of twelve rooms

For travellers who’d rather whisper: a converted private house on the quieter shore, dinner under a two-hundred-year-old plane tree.

Houses are named in your proposal — we hold allocations at a handful of properties we know room by room.

05In good hands

Door to jetty

Private car from Milan or Malpensa, then a boatman on call — the lake road is for locals and deliveries.

Hosts, not guides

A head gardener, a silk archivist, a boatman with forty years of the lake — people we’d invite to dinner.

Tables & tickets

Waterline tables and after-hours villa entries held in your name before you land.

In-trip concierge

One WhatsApp thread, answered by a person in Rome, for anything — from a wind warning to a fourth seat at dinner.

One contact

A single itinerary designer from first sketch to the flight home — no handovers, no call centres.

Time, protected

Mornings stay empty by design — everything bookable is stacked into the hours the lake is at its best.
